“A Walk to One of Britain's Best Pubs”

A wonderful walk through beautiful countryside — with a National Pub of the Year (twice!) at the beginning, middle or end (or all three!)

Pub walks near Huntington

We think that a walk that starts or ends (or both!) at The Cock in Hemingford Grey is one of the best ways you can spend a morning, afternoon or whole day.

But don’t take our word for it. The Guardian described the six mile stroll around the area as A walk to one of Britain’s best pubs and travel blogger ‘Traveling Han’ calls it The best walk in Cambridgeshire — so it’s pretty special.

Idyllic countryside walk with an award-winning pub at the end

The famous St Ives and Hemingfords walk goes right past our front door.

It’s a 5-6 mile loop, so you can park in our car park and end your walk back here with something refreshing to drink and a delicious meal too.

You’ll see the National Trust’s historic Houghton Mill, the picturesque town of St. Ives, criss-cross the river Great Ouse including a working (and busy!) lock gate and wander through meadows and native woodlands.

The paths are broad and flat, suitable for pushchairs or those with mobility issues and it makes a great cycle route too. For those wanting to leave the car at home you can join the loop from the Guided Busway too.

Be sure to book yourself a table for a well-earned reward in our family-friendly pub at the end!

Al-fresco dining or a cosy fireside meal

We’ve got the perfect spot whether the weather is glorious or grim (often both in the same day in the UK!). Our sun-trap garden is great or if the weather is cool we’ll have a roaring fire going indoors.

Why not have the best of both worlds in one of our exclusive dining pods? They’re brilliant fun in all weather (door open or closed!), with table service in your own private dining area — perhaps for a special occasion or treat?

Practicalities

We know that planning your perfect day out, walking around Huntingdon and St. Ives and starting, ending or breaking your day with a fantastic lunch or dinner takes some planning so here are the practical bits:

Location

We’re less than 10 minutes from Huntingdon and even closer to St. Ives, in the beautiful historic village of Hemingford Grey: how to find us.

Parking

Our car park has 25 spaces. It can fill up on busy days but there’s plenty of free on-street parking nearby — we just ask that you’re considerate of our neighbours with where and how you park please.

Opening hours

We’re open from 12:00 to 15:00 and again from 17:30 to 22:00 on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays; on Fridays and Saturdays from 12:00 to 23:00 and from 12:00 to 19:00 on Sundays. We’re closed on Mondays.

Wheelchair access

Our restaurant is fully accessible but unfortunately the pub building, which dates from the 18th century, isn’t. The restaurant entrance is via French doors from the garden. We have a wheelchair-friendly toilet, accessible via a covered walk way to the rear of the pub.

Allergies and special dietary requirements

We like to keep things fresh and seasonal so our menu does change fairly often. We try to have lots of options for vegetarians and vegans too. Some dishes will have a dairy-free or low-gluten option (where we adapt the dish slightly to suit). There should be something for everyone. Check out our current menus.

If you have any special dietary requirements and especially if you have allergies or intolerances please speak to one of our friendly team.
